Title | Binnie, Alfred Maurice: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished for contributions to Engineering Science in Fluid Mechanics. An unusual flair (underlined) for devising small-scale experiments having significance for engineering has enabled him widely to extend knowledge of the factors controlling motion through pipes and nozzles, and he has explained by theoretical analysis many unexpected phenomena in his experiments. In particular he has investigated condensation in steam-nozzles, shock effects in pipes, swirling motion of fluid passing through a nozzle, and the problem of obtaining in an open channel a uniform stream of water for the testing of ship models held stationary.
