Title | Gorer, Peter Alfred: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Pathologist and immuno-geneticist. Almost the whole of our present knowledge of the serology of tumour transplantation, and of tissue transplantation generally, derives directly or indirectly from the work of Gorer. He discovered what is now called the H-2 system of histocompatibility alleles in mice and has been in the forefront of recent work on this important subject. He has discovered protective and cytotoxic anti-cellular antibodies as well as those which reveal themselves as haemagglutins, and his contribution to the serology of the transmissible leukaemias has been of particular distinction. All Gorer's more general pathological and immunological work has been marked by his insistence upon a rigorously genetical approach. |
