Title | Heath, Oscar Victor Sayer: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished for his original researches in plant physiology, notably for his studies of the mechanism of stomatal movement and of its significance for assimilation and for drought resistance. Discovered the controlling effect of carbon dioxide in very low concentrations and, among other results, showed that the previously accepted theory of stomatal response, based on sugar-starch interconversions, is inadequate. Has concurrently been responsible for investigations on the onion plant that have greatly advanced understanding and control of factors determining morphogenesis. His work, which he is vigorously continuing, is characterised by originality in attack and by critical thoroughness. |
