Title | Porter, George, Baron Porter of Luddenham: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished for his investigation of unstable chemical intermediates and for kinetic studies of the very fast reactions in which they take part. The method of direct observation by flash photolysis which he devised and developed in collaboration at Cambridge constitutes a very important post-war development in physiochemical technique. The application of this and other direct methods by Porter and others has yielded some highly significant contributions to the fields of free radical spectroscopy, the kinetics of atomic recombination and radical reactions in gases, the occurrence and kinetic behaviour of the triplet state, the mechanisms of combustion and carbon formation and the detailed reactions of certain organic radicals in solution. A list of fifty-four papers and articles is appended. |
