Date | 16 March 1961 |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | R.E . Billingham, M.A., D.Sc. (Oxford). Professor of Zoology in the University of Pennsylvania. Distinguished for his contributions to the analysis of the pigmentary system of mammals, including man; to the quantitative study of wound-healing, in which he has made fruitful use of the grafting of isolated epithelial cells; and to many aspects of the biology of transplantation. Alone or with junior colleagues he has clarified the theory of corneal transplantation and has discovered a new method of abrogating resistance to homografts. His recent discovery of a new immunological caused by 'graft against host' reactions is particularly important. In full collaboration with senior colleagues, Billingham has made many contributions to the analysis of the homograft reaction, in work which has demonstrated the phenomenon of immunological tolerance and various other principles of the immunology of transplantation. |
