Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished for his work in organic chemistry, particularly in the field of alkaloids. His main contributions are the characterisation of a large number of new alkaloids, and the elucidation of the stereochemistry of the Lupine alkaloids which has made it possible for him to determine the structures of most of the hitherto uncharacterised bases belonging to this group; his determination of the structure of the highly hydroxylated and methoxylated diterpenoid alkaloid lycoctonine which proved to be the key to the structure of aconitonine. His experimental study with the aid of radioactive isotopes of the biogenesis of alkaloids in plants has enabled him to trace the process of conversion of several amino-acids into alkaloids, and the nitrogen methylation process. A list of 157 publications is attached. |
