Title | Popjak, George Joseph: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 16 March 1961 |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished as a biochemist and particularly for his work on lipid metabolism. In studies on the mammary gland, and by the skilful use of isotopic labelling techniques, he demonstrated the biosynthesis of fatty acids from acetic acid, showing that this occurred by a process essentially the reverse of beta-oxidation; the work was later extended to a study of fatty acid biosynthesis in cell-free systems, with a careful analysis of the factors involved. More recently he has made major contributions to the solution of the complex problem of biosynthesis of cholesterol. His research is characterised by originality of mind and a high degree of skill in execution. |
