Title | Pople, John Anthony: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 16 March 1961 |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished for his work on the application of quantum and statistical mechanics to the explanation of the chemical and spectroscopic properties of individual molecules and the physical properties of assemblies of molecules in the gaseous and liquid states. His early work on the molecular orbital theory of chemical valency did much to clarify the fundamentals of that theory which he then applied with great success to the water molecule, showing for the first time the effect of the lone pair of electrons on its structure and associative properties. He was equally successful with many of the properties of aromatic molecules and radicals. He next tackled the properties of compressed gases, making notable contributions to our understanding of virial coefficients and of the dielectric and magnetic properties of gases. During the past three years he has become an acknowledge leader on the theory of nuclear magnetic resonance, especially the explanation of chemical shifts. |
