| Citation | Dr. N. Tindbergen is one of the leaders of the school of animal behaviour study known as Ethology. The rapidly increasing influence of this group both in Europe and the U.S.A. is due in large measure to his original researches, to his theoretical formulations of hierarchy, sign-stimulus, displacement, etc., and to his book "The Study of Instinct". His studies on visual releasers and the co-ordination of taxis and instinct in birds are now very widely recognized as of fundamental importance. The same may be said of his studies on the behaviour of the insects Philanthus and Satyrus. His investigations of the reproductive behaviour of the fish Gasterosteus are equally outstanding.
