| Citation | Distinguished for his researches on freshwater algae, a field in which he is the acknowledged leader in Britain. Outstanding have been his quantitative studies of algal populations and his analysis of the ecological and biological factors underlying their fluctuations, especially in Asterionella and Melosira. He has, however, also greatly extended our knowledge of the soil algae and nanno-plankton and his acute observation has contributed greatly to algal taxonomy. A feature of his work has been the parallel development of simple and ingenious observational techniques and of laboratory and cultural analysis of the problems. His achievements have been recognised internationally, e.g. by his designation as Baldi Memorial Lecturer to the International Limnological Congress, Madison, 1962. |
