Title | Stevens, Thomas Stevens: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished for his highly original researches in organic chemistry and as a teacher. He has made important contributions to alkaloid chemistry by ingenious syntheses in the isoquinoline group and by degradation studies of the gelsemium alkaloids. He has enriched organic chemistry by the discovery of new reactions, notably the widely-used method for converting carboxylic acids into aldehydes and the method for preparing olefines from ketones. This work illustrates his imaginative approach and clear theoretical perception. The "Stevens rearrangement" of quaternary ammonium salts and related migration reactions formed the subject of a brilliantly planned study in which both the scope and mechanism were elucidated. |
