Title | Denton, Eric James: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his work on the biophysics, biochemistry and physiology of vision in animals and Man, and for his researches of fundamental importance into the problem of buoyancy in cephalopods and fishes. In his work on vision the candidate has made contributions to our knowledge of threshold phenomena, of the nature and behaviour of photo-sensitive pigments including those in deep sea fish, of light absorption by the lens in the eye of fishes and amphibians. His more recent work on buoyancy has yielded a new interpretation in terms of an osmotic mechanism of adjustment of specific gravity associated with the cuttle-bone of cephalopods. The candidates published work excels by its originality and by a successful combination of the biological and physico-chemical approach. |
