Title | Holt, John Riley: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for work in experimental nuclear physics using cyclotrons. Was first to make accurate counter experiments on deuteron stripping. By a study of angular distributions of (d,p) and (d,n) reactions using the deuteron beam of a small Liverpool cyclotron, he established on a firm basis the stripping process, which has proved very useful in investigations on nuclear structure. Recently Holt has changed to high energy physics, using the 380 Mev Liverpool cyclotron, and has completed work on (p,p) and (pi,p) reactions. But his most important contribution has been the determination of the helicities of the neutrino and anti-neutrino produced in pi - mu decays with results of considerable importance for the theory of pi- and beta-decays.
