Citation | He is distinguished for his contributions to molecular biology. Most of his work has been with micro-organisms, in particular with Escherichia coli and the phages which attack it. He has made important contributions to the structure of phages and other viruses, to the genetics of phage and to mutagenesis, especially the mutations produced by acridines. This has led to important conclusions about the genetic code. His experimental demonstration of the existence of messenger RNA in phage-infected cells has revolutionized our ideas about protein synthesis. Recently he has worked on control mechanisms in bacteria and on their sexual conjugation. Together with R Horne he helped to introduce the method of negative staining into electron microscopy. His combination of wide background knowledge, theoretical insight, fertility of ideas and experimental skill is unequalled in these fields. |
