TitleFord, Charles Edmund: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1959
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to cytogenetics particularly in mouse and Man. Ford has developed methods that make possible accurate observations of mammalian chromosome number and form, principally in somatic cells. He and his co-workers have applied these methods with brilliant success to a variety of problems: to show, for example, that the regeneration of haemopoietic tissue following injection of marrow cells into heavily irradiated mice is due to proliferation of the donor cells (labelled by the possession of a visibly abnormal chromosome) rather than to recovery of the host cells: to disclose the cytogenetic individuality of many neoplasms of the mouse: to establish that the normal human somatic chromosome number is 46: to define the normal karyotype and to discover the existence of human beings with the abnormal chromosome sets XXY (Klinefelter's syndrome) and XO (Turner's syndrome) and to confirm that mongolism is a primary trisomic condition.
