| Citation | Distinguished for his researches on ecological genetics in the Moth Panaxis dominula and (partly with A.J. Cain) upon the snail Cepea nemoralis, in which he has demonstrated the importance of selection compared with genetic drift. With C. A. Clarke he has provided the first genetic analysis of mimicry proving gradual evolution of forms controlled by a single gene (the complete results are not yet published). He has also analysed the genetics of species - differences in American Papilios. Sheppard has worked extensively on human genetics, especially the relation between polymorphism and disease. He has written upon the theory of linkage in polymorphism and on population-genetics with reference to ecology. |
