Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Professor Geoffrey Wilkinson is one of the outstanding research workers in modern inorganic chemistry. He has published about one hundred research papers since 1946, a list of which is attached. The first twenty of these deal with nuclear chemistry to which subject he made noteworthy contributions during and after the 1939-45 war. The remainder are concerned chiefly with the chemistry of transition metal compounds in general and cyclopentadienyl compounds in particular. In regard to the volume of research work done, the originality displayed and the new types of substances which he has isolated, Wilkinson's contribution has not been surpassed in this field. Amongst the new types of compounds which he has prepared are substances containing unusual metal-hydrogen, metal-nitrosyl and metal-aromatic bonds. In all of his work there is a marked sense of purpose. His recognition of the unity of chemistry is reflected in the manner in which he has used the whole range of physical methods in the assignments of structure to the various metal-organic compounds which have now become closely associated with his name. |
