TitleHarris, Harry: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationThe candidate has made outstanding contributions to human biochemical genetics, a subject in which he holds a leading position. His profound and exact analysis of cystinuria enabled him to solve the problems of its mode of inheritance which had previously proved baffling. A further full scale investigation enabled him to describe successfully the genetics of hypophosphatasia. He discovered cystathioninuria, a rare metabolic anomaly, and he made the first genetical analysis of beta-aminoisobutyric acid excretion. He has made extensive observations on the genetics of diabetes mellitus. He recently identified a new serum protein in the course of his studies on hereditary protein plasma variants in man. He also discovered genetical variations of haemoglobin in sheep and he has surveyed chemical constituents of the cell wall in gram positive bacteria.
