Title | Stanley, Herbert Muggleton: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Dr. Stanley's achievements range widely over petrochemistry. Long before the petroleum refining industry developed in Britain he saw the need for research into basic processes even though there was little hope then of their industrial exploitation. Stanley's discoveries, described in very many patents, include catalytic olefine's hydration. Styrene and methyl styrenes production, direct oxidation of acetaldehyde to acetic anhydride in the aqueous phase, and the cumene route to phenol and acetone. Most striking are the completely new principle of ammoxidizing propylene to acrylonitrile and the production of vinyl chloride from ethylene instead of acetylene. All these are pioneer developments, based upon fundamental investigations of the principles of these complex reactions, and coupled with a real understanding of their economic significance for this country. |
