Title | Whiffen, David Hardy: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his work in molecular spectroscopy and magnetic resonance. He has pioneered the use of electron spin resonance in the study of free radicals trapped in irradiated single crystals. His experimental and theoretical work in this field has led to the identification of many new organic and inorganic radical species together with important information on their geometrical and electronic structure. His early work (initially with H.W. Thompson) included some of the first measurements of dielectric loss at microwave frequencies. In the field of molecular vibrations, he has made authoritative studies of benzene derivatives and has also contributed to our understanding of infra-red intensities. Recently, he has written important papers on the interpretation of double irradiation experiments in nuclear magnetic resonance. |
