| Citation | Cockerell has been the leading figure in the world-wide development of the hovercraft principle, and his achievement has features in common with that of Whittle in the development of the jet engine. Beginning with models, he established solutions to the main problems of surface-effect vehicles, including their stability. He then had the persistence and drive to convince the sceptics and to raise support for the initial commercial development of the hovercraft. Meanwhile he worked on the improvement of the basic concepts and was the inventor of peripheral jet method of reducing leakage round the seal. He also contributed to the development of the skirt method of sealing which was a further advance in the hovercraft principle. Major developments based upon Cockerell's ideas are in progress in Europe, America and Japan, and increasing numbers of regular hovercraft services are being introduced. |
