Title | Dacie, John Vivian: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Dacie's main contributions concern the haemolytic anaemias, an important field in which he has become an internationally recognised leader: His work covers the hereditary and auto-immune haemolytic anaemias, and paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobulinuria. He was the first to show that the defect in hereditary spherocytosis is in the cell and not in its environment, and is probably metabolic in origin. He demonstrated the existence and importance of pH-dependent haemolysins in sera with "cold agglutinins" and devised ways in which adsorbed haemolysins, including antibodies and complement can be differentiated. This work has provided a rational classification for a previously obscure group of conditions, and has clarified our understanding of the mechanisms of red cell destruction in the body. |
