Title | Nicol, Joseph Arthur Colin: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Distinguished for his researches on bioluminescence of marine organisms. He was the first to prove that luminescence in a wide variety of animals is under the control of the nervous system and that the light producing organs show physiological characteristics typical of other nervously activated tissues such as muscle. He showed similar effects in the single-celled Noctiluca. He has made measurements for many shallow-water and deep-sea animals of the intensity and composition of the light emitted, and has related these with the habits of the animals. He has also done valuable research on the giant nerve fibres of polychaetes and the autonomic nervous system of fishes. |
