Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to infra-red and Raman spectroscopy and (more recently) to nuclear magnetic resonance. He has published 75 papers on the relation between the infra-red spectra and structure of a wide range of molecules, e.g., phthiocerane, puberulic and puberulonic acids, the H3O+ ion, afwillite and the triphenymethyl cation. His work on hydro-carbons has been especially noteworthy in establishing clearly the existence of rotational isomers. In the field of nuclear magnetic resonance he was the first to make use of the C13 isotope to elucidate the spin coupling between equivalent hydrogen atoms. He has also applied nuclear magnetic resonance successfully to problems of internal rotation and to the structure of gibberellic acid. |
