TitleEdward, George Robert: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationSir George joined the design and experimental side of what was then Vickers Armstrong (Aircraft) Ltd. In 1935 and became Chief Designer in 1945. In that capacity he was responsible for the Valiant bomber - one of the first large jet-propelled aircraft to enter service - and for the Viscount airliner, which was one of the first passenger aircraft powered with gas turbines and which became a considerable success all over the world. He was appointed Managing Director in 1953 but continued to take a strong personal interest in design. In this phase he led the work on the design of Vanguard (propeller-turbine powered) and later on the jet propelled VC.10 which has recently entered service. When the British Aircraft Corporation was formed in 1961 he became its Managing Director and undertook the supervision of work on the Concord supersonic airliner, the BAC.111 twin-jet regional aircraft and TSR. 2 military aircraft. Edwards is an outstanding engineer and though he has been very successful as a Managing Director of a large business, his major concern has remained in the engineering area. He has written and lectured widely on aeronautical engineering and has been the recipient of a number of senior engineering awards in the U.K. and U.S.A. He has concerned himself with the stimulation of education and scientific research in fields related to Aviation. His personality is vivid and direct and his views are widely sought.
