Citation | The chemical and physical properties of cell wall polysaccharides from lower and higher plants have been related by Northcote to the mechanism of biosynthesis of the cell wall. He has developed methods for the in vitro culture of plant cells, and has compared the chemical nature of the dissected walls with the electron microscopic appearance of the cells, and with the changes in the activity of enzymes concerned with polysaccharide synthesis. He has thus been able to throw light on the biochemistry of cell morphogenesis and in particular the mechanism of biosynthesis of the cell wall. He concludes that much of the material of the cell wall is synthesized in cytoplasmic organelles, and carried to the wall in vesicles derived from the dictysomes. This has added much to the knowledge of the biochemistry of the development of plant cells and has laid a rational foundation for a study of the mechanism of action of plant hormones. |
