Citation | Nutman has greatly extended knowledge of the factors concerned in symbiosis between nodule bacteria and leguminous plants by combining physiological and genetic methods. He demonstrated active participation by host factors in infection and in nodule development, involving an inhibitory influence of root meristems and root exudates, and has proposed a new hypothesis of root hair penetration. Nutman initiated the genetic analysis of symbiosis; he has discovered simply inherited defects in host and bacteria that block nodule development at definite stages, and a gene-cytoplasmic interaction controlling host resistance. In joint work during 1942 his experiments on root hair deformation led to the discovery of the selective toxicity of phenoxyacetic acid week killers. |
