Title | Stoker, Michael George Parke: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his work on rickettaiae and viruses. Discovered the presence of Rickettsia burneti in Britain in cattle, sheep and ticks, relating to cases of Q-fever in man. Contributed greatly to knowledge of the epidemiology of this disease and of the properties of R. burneti. Knowledge of the life cycle of viruses - the eclipse phase, course of development and cell-to-cell spread - owes much to his studies on Herpes simplex. Since 1959 has headed an active virus unit in Glasgow, has particularly clarified the processes whereby polyoma virus causes malignant changes in cells of mice and hamsters in culture.
