Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Dr. West has made most outstanding contributions to the study of British interglacial and interstadial deposits. His successful reinterpretation of Hoxne made it the type sire for the Great Interglacial in Western Europe. The last (Ipswichian) interglacial was equally well characterised by studies at Histon Road, Bobbitshole, and the Channel coast. These and the Cromerian were co-ordinated by stratigraphic and till-fabric studies. He has produced evidence for the pre-Cromerian interglacials and has interpreted with great skill several interstadial deposits. Equal competence and insight as both botanist and geologist have permitted West to make a decisive break through in the study and co-ordination of Quaternary Research in Western Europe.
