| Citation | MICHAEL FRANCIS ADDISON WOODRUFF, D.Sc., M.D., F.R.C.S., Professor of Surgical Science in the University of Edinburgh; clinical surgeon and experimental biologist. Woodruff was the first to transplant kidneys between human beings in this country and the first to attempt to create immunological opposition to human tumours by lympoid cell transplantations. He has contributed to all aspects of transplantation biology: he was the first to demonstrate that red cell and leucocyte chimerism in human twins is associated with mutual skin graft tolerance, and probably the first to induce tolerance in experimental animals post partum. Woodruff's distinctive and most important contributions are, however (a) his introduction of the concept of graft adaptation into transplantation biology, a concept now judged specially relevant to the interpretation of the long-term survival of kidney homografts; and (b) his pioneering demonstration of the remarkable efficacy of anti-lymphocytic serum as an immunosuppressive agent for homografts - work of great intrinsic interest which has stimulated research on a world wide scale and promises to have important clinical applications. |
