Particularly noteworthy have been his theoretical and experimental work on the absorption of gases by simultaneous diffusion and chemical reaction into agitated liquids, and its application to the design of industrial gas absorbers, his extensive work on the theory of residence time distribution in chemical plant, with experimental application to catalytic cracking units, fluidization, etc; and his work on the definition and measurement of degrees of mixing. In all these areas his pioneering work has been the starting point for important contributions by other chemical engineers. He has been a President of the Institution of Chemical Engineers and his previous posts have included the Deputy Directorship of Research and Development, Industrial Group, U.K.A.E.A., and the Professorship of Chemical Engineering Science, Imperial College. |
