Title | Fatt, Paul: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Ceertificate of Election Citation typed. Letter attached to certificate. |
Citation | Distinguished for his studies of nerve and muscle. He was jointly responsible for several important advances in the fields of neuro-muscular and central-nervous transmission. These are: (i) the intra-cellular recording of the end-plate potential and the analysis of the underlying permeability change; (ii) the discovery of spontaneous miniature end-plate potentials and of the quantal secretion of acetyl-choline from motor nerve terminals; (iii) the ionic mechanism of inhibitory potentials in crustacean muscle and spinal motoneurons, and the presence of a cholinergic relay in this negative feedback circuit; (v) the discovery of the presence of an inter-neurone in even the most direct inhibitory reflex pathways; (Vi) the role of divalent cations in the production of action potentials in crustacean muscle; (vii) the analysis of the large membrane capacity of frog muscle, indicating that the sarcoplasmic reticulum presents an extension of the cell surface. |
