Title | Giffard, John Anthony Hardinge: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his original work in the development of some of the early high temperature austentic steels used in gas turbines and for his work in various branches of chemical engineering. As the first Managing Director of the National Research and Development Corporation, Halsbury was responsible for a number of critical decisions which have had an important effect on subsequent developments, particularly in the field of computers and the development of the Hovercraft. His influence in bringing scientific discoveries to the stage of development has also been actively exerted in other fields. Latterly, he has made broader contributions to scientific work, partly through his widespread industrial connections and through his Presidency of the Institute of Production Engineers and the Machine Tool Industry Research Association. The significance of his services in matters relating science with public affairs has been recognised for example by his chairmanship of the Halsbury committee on decimal coinage, his Chairmanship of the Science Museum Advisory Council and his election as President of the Parliamentary and Scientific committee in succession to Lord Salisbury. |
