Title | Jamison, Robin Ralph: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | The candidate qualified in Cape Town and did post-graduate research there into the refrigerated gas storage of fruit. In 1937 he joined Rolls-Royce to do research and development on piston aero-engines followed by pioneer work on aero gas turbines, especially on aerodynamics and combustion. In 1950, at the Bristol Aeroplane Co., he became responsible for the design and development of the ramjet engines for the Bloodhound missile. Now he is directing research into a wide range of problems in advanced air breathing propulsion, at speeds up to 5,000 knots, including gas dynamics, aerodynamics, heat transfer, chemical kinetics, materials and structures. The candidate can fairly be given major credit for the evolution of the ramjet type of propulsion unit. This apparently simple concept required, for its practical use, the solution of problems of a complex scientific and technological character in the fields of combustion, aerodynamics and materials and the candidate was notably successful in combining scientific principles with the artistry of design, to produce an important and successful practical result. His present work shows every sign of continuing this combination of scientific gradp and technological flair. |
