Title | Peart, William Stanley: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Was the first to demonstrate the release of noradrenaline from the sympathetic nerve endings, the first to isolate angiotensin, and the first (with Elliott) to determine its amino-acid sequence. Has also shown that adrenaline and noradrenaline would release 5-hydroxytryptamine from carcinoid tumours in man, and that flushing in such cases was not due to 5-hydroxytryptamine. (It has subsequently been shown that bradykinin is released). With his team has developed more sensitive and accurate methods for the assay of renin and angiotensin in body fluids, and with these methods obtained more complete information as to the variations of renin and angiotensin in health and disease. |
