Title | Tyrrell, David Arthur John: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for contributions to knowledge of viruses, especially those causing respiratory infections in man. In 1959-60 he brought to light a new family of viruses, rhinoviruses, responsible for common colds and showed how they could be cultivated and studied. He has since laid the foundations of knowledge about these viruses, their physical properties, clinical effects and epidemiology. Co-operative international studies on rhinoviruses have now been instituted. Tyrell has been the inspiring leader of a team at the Common Cold Research Unit, Salisbury. In 1965 he made another big advance by showing how a number of viruses, hitherto exclusive, could be grown in organ cultures. |
