Title | Glass, David Victor: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | One of the world's foremost demographers. As Director of the pioneering Family Census of 1946, Glass played a leading part in new and illuminating analyses of fertility by segments of married life, so linking formal and social demography and laying the foundations of new and greatly improved assessment of fertility trends by population forecasting. Glass has made contributions of great importance to the study of the nature and consequences of national population policies, whether pro-natalist or based on the limitation of families. He has applied modern demographic methods to the analysis of imperfect demographic data from the past; and has contributed extensively to the objective analysis of social mobility in Great Britain. Professor Glass was a member of the Statistics and the Medical and Biology Committees of the Royal Commission on Population and is an Honorary President of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population. His election would revive a practice that dates from the earliest days of the Society. |
