Title | Marshall, Walter: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Dr. Marshall is known for his outstanding work in theoretical solid state physics, particularly in magnetism. He gave the first correct explanation of the linear specific heat in dilute alloys of transition metals, the first proper description of the magnetic field acting on a nucleus in a ferromagnetic and the first realistic discussion of the conditions for antiferromagnetism. He has published important papers on order-disorder phenomena, on scattering of neutrons by liquids and on shock waves. Many of his papers have involved him in controversy, running counter to the views of other experts, but he has usually turned out to be right. His work is marked by originality of ideas and by simple but powerful mathematical techniques, and has had a very important influence on the experimental investigation of the subject. |
