| Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to analytic number theory, to the arithmetic theory of forms, and to the geometry of numbers. His solution of Waring's problem in algebraic number fields, with a number of unknowns independent of the field, is a notable advance; and his investigations into the solubility of homogenous Diophantine equations have added greatly to our knowledge. In collaboration with Swinnerton-Dyer, he has formulated conjectures concerning elliptic curves which have provided the basis for many researches now in progress. |
