| Citation | Distinguished for his work on symbiotic nitrogen-fixation in nodulated plants. In the 1930s he and his students made a reputation for studies on the physiology and metabolism of the root-nodules of leguminous plants and on the incretion of fixed nitrogen from roots. Early in the 1940s he commenced his investigation of the then little known root-nodules of non-leguminous plants, and largely as a result of his work on many aspects of this symbiosis, it is now recognised that nitrogen fixation by such plants is of great ecological significance and potential practical importance. His work is characterised by extremely careful attention to experimental technique; he was one of the first to use isotopic nitrogen in fixation studies, and to demonstrate the non-legume nodule' requirements for minor elements. |
