| Citation | As a practising surgeon he recognized the characteristics of a new syndrome in African children which is now known as Burkitt's lymphoma. By personal investigations throughout the world he demonstrated that tumour occurred commonly only under specified climatic conditions in Africa and New Guinea and has subsequently been responsible for investigations into its possible association with virus infections and holo-endemic malaria. He demonstrated the responsiveness of the tumour to chemotherapy and that cure could be achieved by small doses. He has shown that many diseases vary unexpectedly in incidence over short distances and that a wide variety of diseases vary in incidence in the same way between underdeveloped and developed countries. Some of these may be associated with a low roughage diet. His studies have been responsible for renewed world interest in the geographical distribution of cancer and other apparently non-infectious diseases. |
