Title | Gold, Victor: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed. Letter attached to certificate. |
Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to physical organic chemistry, directed towards a quantitative understanding of fundamental reactions in solution. He has advanced knowledge of mechanisms of simple reactions by kinetic studies, especially through novel applications of isotope exchange and isotope effects. His early recognition of nucleophilic catalysis of anhydride hydrolysis by heterocyclic bases has found application in enzyme mechanisms. He established the existence and correct structure of carbonium ions formed by protonation of olefins and aromatic hydrocarbons, and the indicator acidity function (J-O) governing carbinol isolation. His work on the interaction of aromatic nitro-compounds with bases has clarified a confused subject and included the discovery of the first photochemical aromatic substitution reaction. A list of more than 100 publications is appended. |
