| Title | Haddow, Alexander John: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
| Description | Citation typed. Note of place of birth attached to certificate. |
| Citation | His principal contributions are on mosquito and tabanid ecology as related to zoonoses, notably the demonstration of circadian rhythm in hutentry, biting, swarming, flight and oviposition; observations on vertical distribution and migrations in and above forest. With parallel ecological studies on monkeys and other mammals, including a detailed investigation of Cercopithecus ascanius, this work elucidated the epidemiology of sylvan yellow fever in Africa, Aedes africanus being incriminated as a dangerous vector of this and other virus diseases. Many unknown viruses were also isolated from mosquitoes. Studies on Burkitt's lymphoma revealed that climatic parameters delimit its African distribution, and suggest a mosquito-borne aetiological factor. |
