Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to mammalian genetics and the genetics of continuous variation. He has made many contributions to the formal and physiological genetics of the mouse, including the discovery of the first sex-linked factor. His most important work is a series of studies on the response of mouse populations to artificial selection, particularly on its interrelationship with the environment, its asymmetry and the reasons why response eventually ceases. He has developed a method for the genetic analysis of the aetiology of those human diseases and congenital malformations with multifactorial inheritance. This clarifies the concept of hereditary predeposition and has been widely adopted in clinical genetics. It has been applied by him to the study of diabetes mellitus. Author of a standard text on quantitative genetics which is very widely used for teaching. |
