Title | Weatherley, Paul Egerton: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his work on the physiology of the whole plant, especially in the general fields of the uptake of water and mineral nutrients from the soil and the movement of water and dissolved substances within the plant. His researches are characterized by their originality of outlook and by the elegance of the experimental techniques employed, often involving the use of new and ingenuous apparatus. Particular mention may be made of his very successful use of pressure systems and wind-tunnels in the study of the uptake of water and ions, and of the advantage he has taken of the demonstration that the stylets of certain aphids penetrate individual sieve-tubes of the phloem and so enable changes in their contents to be observed. |
