| Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to protein chemistry, particularly for the development of a chemical method for the stepwise degradation of peptide chains using phenyl isothiocyanate. This is now the most widely used technique for determining amino acid sequences in proteins and has contributed extensively to our present knowledge of protein structure and its relationship to biological function. He has developed the method as an automatic procedure to determine N-terminal sequences up to 50 residues along the protein chains. He has used the method in a study of the basis for heterogeneity of antibody proteins and it has been applied to many other problems in his and other laboratories. |
