Title | Woods, Stephen Esslemont: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Woods is an exceptionally-gifted physical chemist and metallurgist who has a unique, creative flair for the successful application of fundamental principles, particularly those of thermodynamics and kinetics, to industrial processes. He has been largely responsible for the initial concept of the new blast furnace process for zinc, and he has contributed in a major way to its successful, though lengthy, development to commercial fruition by his ultimate complete mastery of the complex thermodynamic and kinetic phenomena involved. This mastery, combines with his key inventions concerned with practical aspects and problems of the process, have contributed significantly to science and its commercial application. The new furnace and process which operates close to the limits of what if physico-chemically possible, have revolutionised the zinc-lead smelting industry, and have been of great commercial benefit to this country. |
