Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his studies on the properties of the membrane in striated muscle fibres. His early researches were mainly concerned with the passive ionic permeability of the resting muscle membrane, but included a useful demonstration of the contribution made to the resting potential by the electrogenic extrusion of sodium ions. After developing an elegant method for applying the voltage-clamp technique to individual fibres in frog muscle, he then applied it to analyse in detail the manner in which the action potential is propagated not only longitudinally along the fibres but also radially in the transverse tubules, and has recently completed a theoretical reconstruction of propagation in this highly complex system. This work has provided a valuable insight into the mode of coupling between excitation and contraction. |
