Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to the theory of physical metallurgy, and especially to the theory of dislocations and its use in elucidating the geometry and mechanism of twinning and martensitic transformations. He was a pioneer in the development of the theory of continuous distributions of dislocations and its interpretation in terms of non-Riemannian geometry. The Bilby-Cottrell-Swinden model of crack-tip plasticity has been widely used in modern fracture mechanics. With A.H. Cottrell he carried out basic studies of the interaction between point defects and dislocations, the migration of point defects to dislocations, and dislocation pinning. In addition he has applied the principles of theoretical metallurgy to such practical problems as the hydrogen embrittlement of steel and the explanation and cure of surface defects which occur during the rolling of steel strip. |
