Title | Bishop, Peter Orlebar: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1970 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | P.O. Bishop's work has been mainly concerned with problems in visual optics, the neurophysiology of the visual pathways and centres in the brain and the neural mechanisms concerned in visual perception. Bishop was one of the first to use single-unit recording for studying retino-topic projections onto the visual centres in the brain. He has been a pioneer in the application of quantitative methods in visual neurophysiology particularly in relation to the properties of the receptive fields of cells at the various levels of the visual pathway. More recently he has been concerned with the neural mechanisms in the cerebral cortex that are responsible for binocular depth discrimination and form vision. He has formulated the first detailed neurophysiological theory of binocular vision and stereopsis based on direct experimental evidence. |
